What fence problems can be repaired instead of replaced?

Why do fence posts lean in League City?
Three reasons, and they all come back to water. First, the post rotted at the ground line. Treated pine lasts in the ground, but the few inches at the soil line go wet and dry over and over and turn soft. Second, the footing was too shallow or too narrow, and our clay swelled and shrank until the concrete rocked loose. Can you match new cedar pickets to a weathered fence?
Not on day one. New Western red cedar goes up pink and tan. Your old pickets have gone silver gray in the sun. For the first few months the repair shows. After a summer the new cedar starts to gray, and within a year most people cannot find the patch from the street.
What we match right away is everything else: picket height and width, the gap between them, the rail count, and side by side or board on board. Vance measures the old panels and cuts the new pickets to the same layout, so the fence reads as one line while the color catches up. If you want it even now, stain the whole side after the repair. That brings old and new to one color and adds years to the pickets.

When should you replace a run instead of patching it?
Count the bad posts. If one or two posts in a run have failed and the rails and pickets are still hard when you push a screwdriver into them, repair it. If a third of the posts lean, the picket bottoms crumble along most of the run, and the rails have pulled away from the posts, you would be nailing new cedar to a frame that is on its way out. Replacing that run costs less than patching it every year. Vance tells you which side of that line your fence is on, and both answers come with a written price.
