Older than most people think. A ranch home near downtown Friendswood built in the 1960s or 70s has been through several roofs already, and the one on it now is often a three tab shingle that was never built for this much sun. Look for bald patches where the granules have washed into the gutter, curled corners, and pipe boots with the rubber split open. Those roofs are low pitch, so water moves slowly and finds every weak seam.

The fix is not cutting down the tree. Trim limbs back so nothing touches the roof, clean the valleys and gutters every fall, and let Vance check the deck under the shady slopes when he is up there. Caught early, that is a morning's repair. Caught late, you are replacing a slope instead of a strip.
