Overview

What does storm damage look like on a League City roof?

League City roofs take three kinds of storm hits: hurricane and tropical storm wind off Galveston Bay, spring hail, and straight line wind from summer thunderstorms. Wind lifts shingles along the eaves, rakes and ridge, breaks the seal strip, and creases the shingle where it folded back. A creased shingle never lies flat again, and rain drives under it in the next storm. Hard wind also tears ridge caps loose, rips the rubber on pipe boots and peels back drip edge.

Hail is different. A hail hit bruises the shingle. It knocks the granules off in a round spot and crushes the fiberglass mat underneath, so the spot feels soft when you press it, like a bruise on an apple. Blistering looks similar but is not storm damage. Blisters are small raised bumps from heat and moisture inside the shingle, and when they pop the granules come off in a spot with a hard edge and no soft mat under it. Our sun makes blisters common. Vance will show you the difference on your own roof.

Beryl on July 8, 2024 was a wind event here: creased shingles, lost ridge caps and flattened fences across League City. Ike in September 2008 was worse. If your roof went through either storm and nobody has walked it since, it is worth a look.

If water is coming in right now, our emergency roof leak repair page covers the first hour. For damage in one area, see roof repair in League City. When a storm finishes an old roof, read what goes into a roof replacement. For a written report with photos for your adjuster, book a roof inspection.

What does an honest storm damage inspection look like?

Vance walks every slope, not just the side facing the street. He checks the ridge and hip caps, the eaves and rakes where wind gets under first, every pipe boot and vent, and the flashing at walls and chimneys. Soft metal on vents, gutters and drip edge shows hail dents that shingles hide, so it tells him what size hail hit and from which direction. He marks a test square on each slope, counts the bruises inside it, and photographs each one with a chalk circle. Creased shingles get a photo with a finger under the lifted edge. He checks the attic for wet decking and daylight. Then he shows you the photos on the ground before anyone talks about money. If the roof is fine, he says so and leaves.

How does insurance work on a storm damaged roof in League City?

Galveston County is a first tier coastal county under the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association, so many homeowners here carry a separate windstorm policy with its own deductible, apart from the homeowner policy that usually covers hail. Which one applies depends on what did the damage, and your agent can tell you. Our part is the documentation: dated photos of every crease and bruise, the test square counts, the dents on vents and gutters, and a written repair scope. You file the claim. The adjuster decides what is covered. We do not promise an outcome, and we will not write up damage that is not there. If the damage is under your deductible, we tell you that too.

Storm chasers vs a local League City roofer

After every big storm, trucks with out of state plates start knocking on doors in Tuscan Lakes and Victory Lakes. Many are gone before the first leak shows up. Warning signs: a stranger on your porch who spotted damage from the driveway, pressure to sign a contract or an assignment of benefits before any inspection, an offer to cover your deductible, and no local address. A Honesty Roofing is at 2125 Boden St in League City and has roofed here since 2009. Vance answers (713) 828-2551, and the person who inspects your roof is the one you can call in three years if something is wrong. If you want a look, you call us.

Repair or Replace

Does storm damage mean a repair or a new roof?

It depends on how much of the roof took the hit and how old it is. A dozen creased shingles along one rake on a ten year old roof is a repair: pull the creased ones, weave in new, reseal the courses around them. Hail bruises across every slope on a roof already losing granules is a replacement, because bruised mats crack and leak over the next few years. Vance tells you which one you have, with photos and a written price. If it is a repair, he will not push a claim for a full roof.

Why Vance

Why League City homeowners call A Honesty Roofing after a storm

Bruise or blister, he shows you

A lot of roofs sold as hail damaged in League City are blistered from heat and age. Vance puts your finger on the spot so you feel the soft mat under a real bruise, then shows you the hard edge on a blister. You see it first.

Photos before money

Every crease, bruise and dented vent gets a dated photo before Vance talks price. He shows you each one on the ground and explains what it means for the roof. If the roof is fine, he says so, no sales pitch.

We document, the adjuster decides

We photograph, measure, and write a repair scope you can hand to your carrier. We do not promise a claim will be approved, and we do not write up damage that is not there. A padded claim carries your name, not ours.

Questions

Storm and hail damage questions

How can I tell if my roof has hail damage? +
From the ground, look for granules at the downspouts, dents in metal vents and gutters, and dark round spots on the shingles. A hail bruise feels soft when pressed. A blister has a hard edge and is heat damage, not hail. Vance checks a test square on each slope.
What do wind damaged shingles look like? +
Look along the eaves, rakes and ridge. Wind lifted shingles have a horizontal crease where they folded back, and the seal strip underneath is broken. Some lie flat again and look fine from the street, but they lift in every wind after that. Missing ridge caps are the easiest sign.
Should I file an insurance claim for storm damage? +
Get the roof inspected first. If the damage is minor and under your deductible, a claim gains you nothing. If it is widespread, we give you photos and a written scope for your carrier. Whether windstorm or homeowner coverage applies depends on what did the damage. Ask your agent.
How soon after a storm should I get my roof looked at? +
Within a few weeks, before the next hard rain finds the creased shingles. Stay off the roof yourself. Call (713) 828-2551, tell Vance what you see from the ground, and he will get to you during our Monday to Saturday, 7 AM to 7 PM hours. Active leaks go first.
Will you pressure me to sign anything? +
No. Vance inspects, shows you the photos, and gives you a written price for the repair he recommends. Then he leaves. Send it to your insurance company, get other quotes, or call back next month. The price is written down, so you have it in hand while you decide.
